I have a loose tooth. What should I do?

If you notice a loose tooth as an adult, you may need to see a dentist as soon as possible. In this post, our North York dentist offers tips on what to do at home with a loose tooth until you can come in for an appointment.

What should I do if I discover a loose tooth?

While it can be alarming to discover you have a loose adult tooth, there are some things you can do at home until you can get in to see your dentist. Once we’re able to assess the cause, we can plan to save the tooth, remove it, or replace it with a bridge or dental implant.

Is a loose tooth a dental emergency?

We recommend that patients contact us regarding any loose teeth as soon as possible - it would be on our list of dental emergencies. For adults, loose teeth often occur as the result of injuries to the face or jaw.

Keep an emergency kit

Preparing a dental emergency kit is critical. Here are some items to make sure you include:

  • Gauze
  • Over-the-counter pain killer
  • Ice pack
  • Small, lidded container in case the tooth falls out
  • 5000 Yonge Dental’s contact information

What should I do in an emergency?

The first thing you’ll want to do if you discover a loose tooth is to stay calm. Take some deep breaths and stop any bleeding with gauze. Take a pain killer if you are experiencing swelling or pain (refer to instructions on the bottle for recommended dosage and follow carefully).

Apply an icepack to the area to help bring swelling down. As soon as you feel comfortable and safe, call our office right away, and we will make room in our schedule to see you. The sooner you can get dental treatment for a loose tooth, the better.

What are some other potential causes of loose teeth?

Along with traumatic injuries, some other potential causes of loose teeth can include:

  • Gum disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pregnancy (changing hormone levels can impact the periodontium - the collection of ligaments and bones supporting the teeth)

How do dentists treat loose teeth?

The best treatment option for you will depend on the cause of your loose tooth. We can often treat loose teeth with bone grafts, mouth rinses or medications, or other options.

If your loose tooth falls out, the dentist may be able to restore your smile with a dental bridge or dental implant.

Of course, along with treating your loose tooth, we’ll be able to answer any questions and address concerns you may have while explaining your treatment options.
